Technology & Senior Care
The American population is aging rapidly, and the growing demand for senior care has inspired exciting advancements in senior-focused technology. Although the senior care industry has been slower to embrace technology in the past, there are now constantly evolving developments in technology designed to address the health, safety, and well-being of seniors.
Mobile apps have been developed to provide assistance with issues such as:
- Monitoring and Location Tracking
- Social Interaction
- Health and Wellness Tracking
- Cognitive Assessments
- Virtual Companion Care
- Virtual Reality (VR)
- Smart Home Technology
There are also several third-party emergency response systems that can help with such issues as medication reminders.
Senior care communities are also beginning to embrace technology. Many are now incorporating technology into daily life in the community from ‘smart’ features in residences, to increasing the options residents have to stay engaged and connected.
Many apps require only a minimal one-time cost to download, and some are completely free to download through the App store (for iPhone users) or Google Play (for Android users). Oftentimes, the paid apps are covered by insurance.
Safety Through Modern Technology
Falling is considered to be the biggest safety risk for seniors who are ‘aging in place’. Experiencing a single fall doubles a senior’s likelihood of falling again, and the consequences can be devastating: if the senior breaks a hip during a fall, the average time from fall until death is approximately one year.
New advancements in technology now offer highly effective solutions for lowering the risk of falls in seniors. SARA (Strength Autonomy and Resilience Assistant) is one example of a virtual fall-prevention program with an individualized focus. After completing an intake survey, seniors are assigned a set of personalized exercises that they can do at home. Their progress is tracked and reported over the course of 12 weeks, and exercises are modified as needed.
Educational Tools for Caregivers and Seniors
Whether it’s in-home care or at a care community, arranging for a senior’s long-term care involves managing several moving parts – in most cases, this responsibility falls upon the family members. But when families live far apart from each other – which is often the case in this day and age – coordinating for care can be difficult.
Apps like Carely can streamline the caregiving process for families by simplifying care communication and connecting them to the information they need to make informed care decisions with their loved ones.
Smart Companion
Products like Smart Companion are the next step up in technology and products that are similar to Amazon Alexa, but they focus specifically on a senior’s needs. This technology improves connectivity between seniors aging at home and their families to get easy access to healthcare solutions using voice technology.
Featured services include:
- Companionship and Entertainment
- Voice and Video Calls
- Emergency 911 Services
- Monitoring and Location Tracking
- Prescription Reminders and Timers
- Systems range in price from $50 to $100 a month.
